A short-lived IE8 Beta1 affair

June 3, 2008 · Filed Under Internet Explorer, Technology, Web

A thought came to me to try out and write a IE8 review so I hurriedly installed IE8 in a test machine. Every step of the installation worked fine and at the end of installation, IE8 prompted me to reboot the computer, which I did.

The welcome page shown below greeted me upon launching IE8 for the first time:

 IE8 welcome page

Upon setting most of my preferences, I am off to browse the usual websites I visit.

First and foremost, let’s test it to open my Yahoo mail account, and this is what I got:

yahoo mail under IE8

Despite the error shown, I was able to log into my Yahoo mail account and the chat function was working, but performance is notably sluggish than when I was browsing it under IE7.

Now, let’s try Gmail this time. Upon launching Gmail, I couldn’t even get inside my inbox. I have to use the Emulate IE7 function to be able to see my inbox. Nevertheless, even if I was able to use IE8 for Gmail, still, performance was sluggish.

I understand that these mentioned websites are not ready yet for IE8, and IE8 is still under a beta stage, but since these websites are part of my online routine, I have no choice but to uninstall IE8 and revert back to IE7.

As an update, even if I have uninstalled IE8, everytime I opened IE7, the welcome page is still that of IE8.
