Viruses versus worms

November 17, 2006 · Filed Under Miscellaneous tips, Technology

Well, this may sound elementary to others, but a lot of people have a misconception about what makes a virus different from a worm and vice-versa. Or are they really different? What makes a virus different from a worm?

Both viruses and worms have only one thing in common, they are destructive programs that are designed to disrupt normal computing process in your computer.  After that, their similirarities end there.

In a nutshell, here are the main difference between a virus and a worm;

- Viruses– needs user intervention like opening an email attachment or clicking a link to deliver its payload.

- Worms — needs no user intervention to replicate. Worms exploits “holes” or vulnerabilities in applications and operating systems to replicate. These “holes” often come from programming errors, and hence, most software companies issue a “patch” to close these holes.
