Internet Explorer 7 Deployment notes
November 16, 2006 · Filed Under Technology, Web
This week, I have deployed Internet Explorer 7 (IE7 RC1) into our corporate network. We have 1000 workstations at the office and I have managed to deploy IE7 to about 400 computers and the results are varied. Here are some of them;
- Some corporate users have incompatible applications with IE7 so they have requested to be reverted back to IE6, which I then obliged.
- Our Helpdesk received calls from users that say “they cannot do their job under IE7. I want IE6 back”. This request, of course, will be subjected to management decision.
- Some computers experienced boot-up hang after the installation of IE7.
- Since I have deployed IE7 to install silently and without rebooting the machine, those users that click a hyperlink inside MS Outlook will have an error saying that there is no default browser that is installed. The solution is to reboot the machine so that the integration between Outlook and IE7 will be complete.
Overall, we had minimal problems with Internet Explorer 7. But as of now, I have decided not to deploy IE7 to the remaining 600 computers until we have seen the full impact from our applications and users point of view.
