Sony Ericsson K800i vs Nokia N73, which is better?
For about 2 weeks now, I am still puzzled of what to get between the two. I really like the K800i, even more after Sony Ericsson has released the K800i in brown color.
As quoted from another site:
If the standard black and grey color of the K800i is not enough for you, Sony Ericsson will be releasing the K800i in chocolate brown color. The brown color would initially be available in the Hongkong and Taiwan region, then after that, it would flow all over asia.
Yes guys, the brown K800i is now available in Manila, and this fact alone makes choosing what to get between the two even tougher than before.
I have made some research and found out that in Esato forum, the vote goes to Nokia N73, with most of the users saying that Nokia N73 is better and more applications can be loaded into it (hey, the N73 is a smartphone, and smartphones need lots of apps to run it).
Some would say that the K800i has a fragile camera cover that is likely to be easily damaged. Another issue would be the cramped keypad design that would surely make typing SMS messages hard.
For those users who have actually used either K800i or the N73, I wanna hear your story. Help me make up my mind. ![]()

I have been using the k800i and so far I think it’s fine.
The camera cover is not fragile as mentioned unless you drop it I think any mobile phone would be fragile.
The control pad is fine. I found no trouble using it at all. In fact I think the n73 control pad may be not so good as my brother in USA also read in an article that they rushed to produce it and is not complete.
Those 2 comments of how the k800i is not good I found is not the issue.
The only problem I found is that it was slightly slow especially when connecting to internet connections.
The program to install is not user-friendly. it’s not a simple 1 click set up.
The menu and functions are not user-friendly. It takes some time to get used to it. The k800i does go to specific functions and setups but it takes some time to click here and there before you are able to get to where you want. What I’m saying is k800i does go in to details when the n73 provides more of the general important functions and that’s what makes it more easy to use.
The video quality for k800i is considered weak. It’s a small size when the n73 is much better.
The photo quality may be similar but the k800i video is just weak.
The k800i has a cybershot but it’s only using a normal camera lens which I’m wondering if that still makes it any good or not… when the n73 has a Carl Seize lens but no cybershot. Of course the special lens should make a big difference but without the word cybershot I wonder does it make the k800i have any advantage to that or not?
I think for taking photos though the k800i does have a real flash unlike the n73 which still uses a lead that can be used as a torch, I think most of the pictures we usually take are in day time anyways and if we take the night shots we are usually surrounded with brightlights anyways. Even with a professional camera but if taking in dark places I still say the picture may not be that attractive anyways. Plus I find it rare fo the occasions.
Please let me know if I’m right or not.
I’m just saying from my experience of using my Sony Ericsson K800I for about 2 months and from what I’ve been reading on other websites and comparing them from the store.
Thanks for leaving a comment. 1 point for the K800i
i have also read that there is an issue about the joystick of the N73
SORRY FOR MY BAD ENGLISH
I am using the k800 and it has much better screen colors than N73 which my father has,the screen colors of N73 looks like been washed up,and also
K800 screen is more sharpness. It does not matter that N73 has a litle bit bigger screen as long as it is useful only in the menu of it.Andnow the big point symbian vs java I prefer 100% java because symbian slows down the N73 and at first it had some problems, and also can find easily many java stuuf in internet than symbian, becayse symbian is not used and well known like java, and for all those I love my S.E. K800 even if some times I am afraid for it’s joystick.
Thanks for the comment John B.
Yes, k800i is a very nice phone. However, newer phones with HSDPA is in my waiting list.
I can’t seem to find a perfect cellphone model that have this capability. I am waiting for Sony Ericsson to release one.
yea, im not bothered about the camera….. i want to know about the mp3 quality and memory…… i heard the the SE k800i depenods on memory stick M2 which is way more expensive than the memory stick used in the n73……. i can over look all the other features but i need to kno who wins in the areas of:
1) music
2) memory card
i have used both handsets.i think they r nearly equal but somebody has to b first.i think n73 is better.se k800i has got a xenon flash.so its no problem taknig shots in the dark.but in day light shots n73 turns out to b the winner.k800i takes lively photos but n73’s photos look more appealing.n73’s pics r more clear.and n73 has got so many office functions and many more.dont forget abt sterio speakers.se is better at taking shots of fast moving objects but n73 is not that far behind.if u think u can live without symbian os and if want to take shots only at night in dark places,go for se.but if u want a decent phone with a great camera go for n73.[n73 may use led flash but it aint useless.its not as good as xenon but its above average].thanx
N73 Sounds great.its got 2 sterio speakers.it,s got 3d effect.the sound is as loud as hell but its not chirpy.on the other hand se k800i has got the lamest quality of sound any 1 can imagine.
lamest sound quality? ohh that’s bad, considering that I’m quite happy with the sound quality of my K750i.
n73 is da best 4evr
this is just my opinion ok…. so don’t freak out:
On as early as 2004 or so,, symbian os - based handsets like nokia, etc.. were discovered unlikely to have virus.. but not as bad as in pc,, moreover they (n0kia cellfones) tend to degrade quality at the utmost lifespan of 4 years( of course new phones would be available) : power automatically shutdown, game crashes, memry card undetected, etc…
On the other hand,, Sony Ericsson can not have virus because it works on java based applications so programs does not reach/read the core. However,, seleq of symbian sw is not available for se which makes it hard to delete protected unwanted files.. and u have to re flash the handset when it got messed up by installng several apps. But for the long run, Sony ericsson cellfones uses compact japanese tech w/c uses really tight hardware that makes it hard to hack. (btw, nokia handsets are easy to hack) bottom line is: use a PDA for a better life. #
k800i & n73 are just equal in capacity:
compare:
Nokia uses European technology
Sony Ericsson uses Japanese technology
w/c is better?
take it from the pro: i have worked for both companies & i know their microchips & parts…
trust me:
THEY ARE JUST THE SAME: it is just a matter of perspective.
mp3 downloads…
How add your site to dtechnorati?…
Hi,
I have nokia N73 for almost 6 months right now and there wasn’t any problem in the phone except that the gallery was hanging for few seconds & it was from the memory card quality is poor, so try to fix amemory card which is orginal or even from well known brand like Sandisk. If you say that which one is better the Nokia N73 or the SE K800i I would say that the SE K800i is a baby toy compared to the King Nokia N73, where the camera pic quality in N73 is higher except in night snaps (Am fair) else the N73 had stereo speakers, 3G, EDGE, Symbian OS v.9.1 (Amazing), slides show on gallery and much much much more…
So I would advice SE K800i owners to sell their toys and let they go for The KING.
nokia lover, the nokia n73 isnt the king, its the n95!!!!
My vote goes to K800i, which I bought 1 month ago. Symbian is symbian, and speed is speed… Depends what you need - a bunch of software for (lets be real) opening word/excel/pdf documents in 240*320, etc? What could you possibly do with that resolution?
On the other hand, if you need better headphones, buy better headphones, and k800i has a bit better pictures…
@marcus: we are talking about same cathegory, meaning phone price, right? And k800i is 30% cheaper than n73 in my country, not to mention n95… Than why don’t you compare qtek 9100 to n95, it’s way better…
Shule, you mentioned memory…
If you are looking at memory as a piece of plastic containing “several” bytes of something, nokia’s memory is cheaper, and that means better. If you take technical view of equipment, I’ll ask somebody else to say is m2 only more expensive, or is it even faster?
Nevertheless, you can’t judge music quality by the phone speaker - plug in some quality headphones, and listen to it. Who will listen to music on the crappy piezzo squeeker, doesn’t matter if it’s mono or stereo?
Hi I have a Nokia N73
And I think it’[s a great phone my last phone was an SE and I was disappointed with it to tell you the truth. After a year and bit about two months outside my warranty it started freezing a lot. The it just decided to stop altogether.
Personally I’d go for the N73 as I’ve never had a problem with nokias.
the more I read about your comments the more confused I get. I am interested in buying a phone asap. I think if you are a camera lover go for the SEK800i. If you are a music fan go for the Nokia N73. As for me I am heading the SE800 way, a decision I hope I will not live to regret. I rest my case.
haha…i want K800i
K800i is very good. I’m using it now. Out of the box, I just need a minor firmware update. Although I see tons of info on how to customize the firmware, I’m still enjoying it as it is so I don’t see the need to do so (for now :)).
